Overview
The Optical Networks Research Group has a significant track record on OFDMA-PONs, optical/wireless MAC layer protocols and architectures and WDM/TDM access networks.
Targeting both layers 1 and 2, research outcomes have been produced on the PHY layer architectures, MAC protocols and control of next generation PONs with TDMA, OFDMA and hybrid WDM/TDM.
Recently research has extended to the transmission over PONs of wireless networks with extended wavelength band overlay.
Work in this area concentrates on the system level design of the converged network, spanning in reach into the aggregation area, exploiting the full centralisation of processing functionalities at the network centre.
