Philosophy research activities
The philosophy department fosters a communal research culture that brings academic staff, postgraduates and interested undergraduates into regular contact.
Activities at the University of Hertfordshire

The philosophy department hosts:
- The Francis Bacon lecture series – annual lectures funded by the Royal Institute of Philosophy, which focus on showing the relevance of philosophy beyond academy
- The Ludwig Wittgenstein lecture series
- Multi-disciplinary student and staff conferences organised by the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Research Institute (SSAHRI)
- Philosophy Society talks
- Philosophy Weekend - an annual event at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park, which provides opportunities for research students and visitors to present their work
- Postgraduate Work In Progress meetings – organised by the postgraduates and funded by the School of Humanities Research conferences
- Research seminars delivered by prominent external speakers
- Staff/postgraduate reading groups - recent texts discussed have included Christine Swanton’s Virtue Ethics and Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age
We also have strong links with other departments within the University of Hertfordshire, especially Psychology and Computer Science .
Research students and visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend seminars and events organised by these departments.
