The Open Graves, Opens Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture Research Project led by Dr Sam George, relates the undead in literature, art, and other media to questions concerning:

  • gender
  • technology
  • consumption
  • social change

The key members of Open Graces, Open Minds include:

  • Dr Catherine Spooner - University of Lancaster
  • Dr Stacey Abbott - University of Roehampton
  • Dr Bill Hughes - University of Sheffield
  • Dr Ivan Phillips - University of Hertfordshire
  • Marcus Sedgwick - award-winning novelist

Events

The project was initiated by a prominent and exciting conference in April 2010, which attracted a great deal of media attention around the world, including a video report in the Wall Street Journal and a feature in The Guardian.  

Open Minds, Open Graves convened again for the Bram Stoker Centenary Symposium at Keats House in Hampstead in April.

Publications

The Bram Stoker Centenary Symposium also celebrated the forthcoming publication of Open Graves, Open Minds: Representations of Vampires from the Enlightenment to the Present Day (Manchester University Press, 2012) - a collection of ground-breaking essays emerging from the original conference edited by Sam George and Bill Hughes.

There is also a special issue of Gothic Studies in preparation (2012/13) which is dedicated to further research showcased at the original Open Graves, Open Minds conference in 2010.
