TVAD - Visiting researchers

We invite visiting researchers to present their recent research findings.

Dr Kjetil Fallan

The TVAD Visiting Researcher for 2012-13 is Dr Kjetil Fallan of Oslo University, Norway. Dr Fallan will visit the School of Creative Arts in November 2012 and May 2013.

The topic for Dr Fallan’s visits is subjectivity in academic and practice-based work, examined through a varied programme of events including:

  •  A staff colloquium 
  •  An Art Talks lecture, ‘Turning My Story into History: Making Memories Matter’ 
  •  A research training seminar ‘Up Close and Personal: Subjectivity in Design and  Research’ 
  •  Student research presentations 
  •  A staff reading group 
  •  A school-wide workshop, Icons and Iconicity 
  •  A Design History Society Day Seminar

Profile   

Dr Kjetil Fallan is Associate Professor of Design History in the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas at the University of Oslo.

He has published widely and is:

  • Author of Design History: Understanding Theory and Method (Berg Publishers, 2010)
  • Editor of Scandinavian Design: Alternative Histories (Berg Publishers, 2012)
  • Co-editor, with Grace Lees-Maffei, of Made in Italy: Reassessing a Century of Italian Design (Berg Publishers, 2013)

Dr Fallan has articles in journals including the Journal of Design History, Design Issues, Enterprise and Society, History and Technology, and Design and Culture. Dr. Fallan is an editor of the Journal of Design History.

Dr David Brody

In 2011-12, TVAD hosted Dr David Brody (Parsons, the New School for Design, New York City) as TVAD Visiting Researcher.

During his visits in October 2011 and March 2012, Dr Brody has been involved in research activities with every constituency in the School of Creative Arts by:

  • giving open lectures in the School’s Critical Dialogues series
  • leading workshops and seminars for postgraduate and research students
  • participating in research seminars with TVAD and research-active School staff

TVAD’s plans for the future include hosting a Visiting Professor.

Profile

Dr David Brody is an Associate Professor of Design Studies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York where he directs the Masters Program in the History of Decorative Arts and Design.

He is the author of Visualizing American Empire (University of Chicago Press, 2010) and co-editor of Design Studies: A Reader (Berg 2009).

A specialist in material culture, visual culture, and design studies, Dr Brody has published writing in:

  • Prospects: An Annual of American Cultural Studies
  • Journal of Asian American Studies
  • American Quarterly
  • Journal of Design History
  • American Periodicals
  • Design and Culture - an article on hotel design and housekeeping featured in 2011

His new book project is titled Do Not Disturb: Design, Hotels, and Labor and is under advance contract with the University of Chicago Press.

Dr Brody has given papers at numerous academic conferences.
