The research seeks to explore the application of David Ulrich's Business Partner model to university HR departments within the current context for HE institutions characterised by uncertainty and change.
It is set within a conceptual framework of resource-based ideas of organisation that suggest that, increasingly, it is human resources that can form the most important basis for competitive advantage.
This in turn has important implications for HR roles and how the HR function is structured.
Preliminary results will be presented from interviews with HR Business Partners, their managers and relevant line managers at a number of UK universities.
