The Clinical Practice, Safe Medicines and Drug Misuse research group, although formally endorsed by the University of Hertfordshire only in May 2011, started its activities in 2008.
The establishment of the Research Centre is a critical point for research in the School of Pharmacy.
Over the last few years a team of recently recruited passionate academics has in fact allowed the building up of a critical mass of expertise to enable the School to establish specific and competitive niche areas of research.
Management and infrastructure
The Centre is part of the Department of Pharmacy within the new School of Life and Medical Sciences. Is it also part of the Health and Human Sciences Research Institute.
The Centre is headed by Professor Fabrizio Schifano, with research leads for the three main work streams.

Major grant awards
Over the last four years, researchers in the Centre have attracted funding:
- in excess of £1.5 M from the European Commission and other EU agencies
- from the General Medical Council (£24 K)
- industry (MS&D; £30 K)
- MedPharma and UH (£50 K)
- Luton & Dunstable Hospital (£30 K)
- Department of Health with MS&D & UH (£70 K)
Such funding includes the award to Professor Schifano as Principal Investigator of the third consecutive EU-Commission-funded, multi-centre (12 EU countries), 2010-2012 Psychonaut/ReDNet research programmes.
