Quality of life, depression and other mental health problems are important aspects of chronic physical illnesses.

Interventions therefore need to address the psychological as well as the physical.

  • Facilitation of Self Management in a Haemodialysis Unit: An Evaluation (SELFMADE) [NIHR RfPB funded - £248,000]
  • ASSIRTED Trial - A pilot RCT of drug treatment for depression in patients undergoing haemodialysis [NIHR RfPB funded - £247,000]
  • RCT of St John’s Wort versus antidepressant versus placebo in patients with Globus Pharyngeus [NIRH RfPB submitted - £244,000]
  • Pilot RCT of CBT for the treatment of depression in patients with ESRD [NIHR RfPB submitted £249,000]
  • An RCT comparing CBT and SSRI in the management of OCD – Feasibility study [In preparation for January submission, NIHR RfPB approx £250,000]
  • Examining the relationship between adjustment and acceptance in patients living with IBD and experiencing psychological distress – working towards an ACT-based intervention study [University of Hertfordshire DClinPsy project]

Other potential areas for development

  • The management of psychological distress in patients living with diabetes and COPD
