Health Showcase

Highlights of a healthy showcase

Tackling obesity, hugging hoodies and inspiring school children were all part of a Health Showcase that took place at the University of Hertfordshire in 2008.

The Health and Human Sciences Research Institute Showcase, its third research showcase, was hosted by Professor Barry Hunt, Director of Health and Human Sciences Research Institute and Dr John Done, Head of the Institute.

Key attractions of the Health Showcase

  • ‘The world’s most relaxing room’, designed by Professor Richard Wiseman - featuring green light, lavender-scented pillows and specially composed music.
  • The Great Weight Debate - on why current approaches to obesity have failed and what the alternatives might be.
  • Ballet dancers vs swimmers – research shows that dancers are fitter than international swimmers and tests focused on strength, endurance, balance and flexibility.
  • ‘Hoodies to Goodies’ – a panel featuring Iain Duncan Smith MP and 2008 London Mayoral candidate Brian Paddick answered questions from the audience about perceptions of young people
  • Schools day – where 300 students from local schools got to explore healthy food, magic, their own fitness and how to save lives
