Research in the Business School is focused in the areas of business strategy, employment studies, creative industries and institutional economics.

The core Centre for Research on Management, Economy and Society (CRoMES) has been segmented into the following Units:

Creative Industries Research and Consultancy Unit (CIRCU)

Launched on 1st October 2003, CIRCU incorporates FIRG (The Film Industry Research Group) which has an established reputation for research and comment on business and management issues pertinent to the film industry.

The Head of the Unit, Dr Keith Randle, is actively involved in research in the global film industries and CIRCU has established links with a range of UK and US academic and film industry bodies.

Finance and Accounting Research Unit (FARU)

A central objective of the research work undertaken within the Finance Accounting Research Unit (FARU) is to provide critical insight into the functioning of financial markets, and to employ research methodologies developed more broadly within the context of multi-disciplinary projects.

Global Economy and Business Research Unit (GEBRU)

The Global Economy and Business Research Unit (GEBRU) is focused on issues that that face economies, businesses and communities in the context of globalisation.

The group undertakes both empirical and policy work, as well as engaging in the theoretical and methodological debates that underpin them.

Group for Research into Organisational Evolution (GROE)

GROE was formed in 2009 to replace the Centre for Research in Institutional Economics. GROE focuses on the phenomenon of change in industry, business, and other relevant organisations.

Key questions include the relative importance in the evolution of adaptation versus competition and elimination, the transmission of information between organisations, the generation of organisational complexity, and the effects of different institutional environments and complementarities.

Learning in Business Research Unit (LIBRU)

The Learning in Business Research Unit (LIBRU), launched in January 2011, provides support to staff working on research and consultancy projects related to Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), e-learning and work-based learning.

Members of the unit have worked on more than fifteen internally and externally funded learning and teaching projects and have developed expertise in the areas of wikis for collaborative learning, teaching statistics, team-teaching, work-based learning etc.

Management and Strategy Research Unit (MASRU)

Research into complexity and management was institutionalised in 1995 by the setting up of a Complexity and Management Centre.

The main activity of this Centre since that time has been the publication of two series of books and the running of a PhD group and a professional doctorate program since 2000. These activities have so far produced 46 doctorates and 11 research Master's degrees.

Marketing Insight Research Unit (MIRU)

The Marketing Insight Research Unit (MIRU) is focused on the customer-firm interaction – whether this is direct and personal; indirect and mediated by the internet; in a dyad or in a network of stakeholders. 

The definition and scope of marketing as an approach to research and practice is open for discussion and critique within this group.

Statistical Services and Consultancy Unit (SSCU)

Launched in the mid 1990s, the Statistical Services and Consultancy Unit (SSCU) provides statistical consultancy and research work in a wide range of applications.

It also has a suite of short courses in statistics which are open to the general public and provides bespoke training courses to organisations.

Sustainable Business Practices Research Interest Group (SPRING)

Launched on January 2007, SPRING is very much involved with the activity of Green Potential, the environmental consulting group that gathers environmental management experts from across the University.

The Head of the Unit is actively involved in research in the LCEGS sector and has established a network of companies from this sector.

Systems Management Research Unit (SMRU)

Launched in 2009, the Systems Management Research Unit (SMRU) provides research work and consultancy services in a wide range of subjects encompassed within Information Systems, Project Management and Management Science.

Work and Employment Research Unit (WERU)

This unit undertakes critical and multi-disciplinary research in employment and employment relations, and from this basis makes a contribution to major contemporary debates as well as to policy development.

It organises a series of seminars and conferences, provides a subscription research service to relevant policy and user groups, undertakes research consultancy projects and constitutes a forum for an interchange of ideas and perspectives on research in employment relations.
