Group for Research into Organisational Evolution (GROE)

Description

The Group for Research on Organisational Evolution (GROE) was formed in 2009 to replace the Centre for Research in Institutional Economics. GROE focuses on the phenomenon of change in industry, business, and other relevant organisations.

Key questions include the relative importance in evolution of adaptation versus competition and elimination, the transmission of information between organisations, the generation of organisational complexity, and the effects of different institutional environments and complementarities.

Aims of the unit

The unit aims to:

  • Develop and publish research into the nature of business organisations, how they evolve, and how they depend on supporting institutions.

Research themes

The unit’s research themes include:

  • Adaptability and survival in firms
  • Institutional complementarities and economic performance
  • Institutional preconditions of economic development
  • The evolution of institutions and organisations

Indicative Research and Consultancy Projects

GROE has currently four PhD students working on the following topics

  • Trust in business organisations
  • Adaptability and survival in small firms
  • The institutional preconditions of economic modernisation
  • The creation of business niches.

In addition, faculty members are working on other research themes noted above.

2011 Conference

Evolutionary Thinking and its Policy Implications for Modern Capitalism

An international workshop will be held on 22-23 September 2011 at Offley Place, Great Offley, near Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England.
