Ballet dancers vs swimmers

Thursday 23 October, 18.15 to 18.45

de Havilland Campus

A team made up of Sport Science and Physiotherapy researchers has been testing the fitness of elite ballet dancers from the Royal Ballet and the English National Ballet and some of the UK’s most talented swimmers.

Professor Tim Watson, Research Lead of the School of Health and Emergency Professions will be making an exciting and surprising presentation about the results of this test.

Try it for yourself

There is not just one version of fitness – different people and different sports are fit in different ways. This work compares people from different sports using standard fitness profile tests to show the similarities and differences.

The idea of these fitness profiles is so that coaches, trainers and therapists can deliver exactly the right type of training and treatment, therefore enabling the sportsperson to achieve their very best performance.

At the Showcase, you can see film of the testing taking place, try some of the tests yourself and compare your results against those of the ballet dancers and the swimmers.

The study team is led by Professor Tim Watson and Dr Andrew Garrett.
