University-funded property scheme celebrates first successful year
To mark its first year, the Partnership Accreditation for Landlords (PAL) Scheme is celebrated with an Anniversary event held on Thursday 28 February at the Mercure Hatfield Oak Hotel.
The Anniversary Event
It was aimed at Landlords and Property Managing or Letting agents plus businesses, trades and organisations that are willing to support PAL’s objective to raise the physical and management standards of private rented property within the Welwyn Hatfield district.
The scheme - funded by the University of Hertfordshire and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, and supported by many local organisations - was launched in January 2012 and already has 50 landlords and 200 properties listed on the scheme.
Success of the scheme
Diane Kendrick, community liaison and student support officer at the University of Hertfordshire, said: “It is important to us that our students are not affected by low standards of living conditions when searching for privately-let accommodation. The success of the scheme has enabled the University, for the first time, to provide a comprehensive list of recommended landlords to students looking for accommodation.”
“We hope to provide more incentives to further encourage applications as well as launching an online search facility. We hope that the scheme is not only benefitting our students, but will have a positive effect on the local community in which they live as well.”
The event featured two guest speakers - the first, Mark Alexander, is a landlord who is the founder of website, Property118.com and a freelance internet marketing consultant. His presentation covered how landlords can save money, minimise risks and maximise returns. The second speaker, David Lawrenson, looked at the current issues facing private landlords today and the issues that are likely to emerge in the future.
