New training opportunities for Herts architects

Architects in Hertfordshire will now have increased opportunities to access Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, due to an exciting new collaboration between the University of Hertfordshire and The Royal Institute of British Architects East (RIBA East).

RIBA East, which covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, has signed a CPD joint venture agreement with the University of Hertfordshire, as a result of which both organisations will deliver a series of seminars to RIBA members and associated professionals.

RIBA East will focus on delivering its current technical and core CPD, while the University will concentrate on a more creative and practical offering, drawing on its extensive research expertise which underpins future design solutions and developments.

The programme will combine seminars, workshops and networking to help develop the knowledge and skills of architects, and those in related professions. As well as developing skills using the latest software programs, it will also help to inspire attendees to consider their practice in a more artistic way and engage them in thinking about their work in relation to art, design and current issues, such as renewable energy and sustainability. There will also be focus sessions on designing for specific sectors, including healthcare.

“The Hertfordshire Association of Architects alone consists of over 500 Chartered members, and the launch of the programme this October will see those members being provided with stimulating content and a convenient location to enable them to meet their CPD obligation,” said RIBA East regional director Louise Todd.

Both RIBA and CIAT members are eligible for preferential rates.

Judy Glasman, Head of the School of Creative Arts, commented, “This collaboration demonstrates how universities and industry can work side by side and we are delighted to be partnering with RIBA East to help deliver CPD within Hertfordshire and the region. We hope that those attending will gain a significant amount from learning with our academics in a dynamic and stimulating university environment.”

The seminars will be held at the College Lane campus, Hatfield once a month, starting on 28 October.

Two topics will be covered in an afternoon session, starting at 1.15pm and concluding with networking and drinks. Sessions will include: • Working with CAD and photoshop • Model making and vacuum forming • Art and architecture • Renewable energy and sustainability • The theory of design • Designing out crime and terrorism • Employment law
