Accounting and Finance graduate, Nasir Hussain from Luton received this year's Reed Accounting award for the most improved accounting student. He was awarded the prize in recognition of his vast improvement in his average second year grade in comparison to his final year grade - a 54% increase in total. This meant he received a well deserved 2.1 in his degree. Nasir will be presented with his award, along with a cheque for two hundred pounds donated by the Reed Accounting recruitment agency, at the University's annual graduation ceremony held in November.
On top of the award, Nasir was also given a glowing reference from his ex-employers GE Healthcare-Datex Ohmeda Ltd, where he was described as “an integral part of the finance team over the year of the placement.” This year was the first year of the Reed Accounting award scheme, which was set up by Ray Cobb Senior Lecturer in the Accounting, Finance and Economics department. It has been designed to encourage accounting, finance and economics students to do a placement year, so that they may improve their employability within the job market.
Michael Jones of Reed Accounting had this to say about the placement year: “With the current recession, graduates will increasingly find themselves coming up against people who have 15 plus years' experience within the job market. It is therefore vital that students take up a placement year to gain experience in order to vastly improve their chances of future employment.”
The scheme was also used as a way of improving commercial links of the Business School’s Accounting, Finance and Economics departments part of the University's strategy to be business-facing.
