PhD Researches Ice Age In Hertfordshire

Wendy Brownsell has received her PhD from the University of Hertfordshire following research which has contributed to the discussion around the extent and duration of ice cover in Hertfordshire during the Anglian Glaciation around 400,000 years ago

The research looked at the deposits from the ice flow, which created the deep tunnel valley under Hitchin and Stevenage, and also caused the Thames to stop flowing through the Vale of St Albans and take the route it does today. Her research revealed a complex sequence of sediments deposited by the ice, including chalk, flint and rock brought to the area from the North and Scotland.

Wendy said: “It has taken nearly 9 years but it was worth it”.

Wendy is among the 4,300 new graduates who have celebrated academic success in St Albans this week. The annual Awards ceremony for the University of Hertfordshire took place at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban.
