Hertfordshire children to be measured for national sizing survey
The University of Hertfordshire has launched the next phase of a major new research project to measure children for the National Childrenswear Survey.
The project, Shape GB is the first large-scale project to measure children across the country using 3D body scanners. Hundreds of children from Hertfordshire, Essex and North London are being recruited and measured as part of the national survey which continues until 7th August at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield.
The National Childrenswear Survey is collaboration between The University of Hertfordshire, Next, Monsoon, George at ASDA, Loughborough University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Select Research, specialists in 3D scanning and sizing surveys.
The aim is to measure at least 6,000 boys and girls aged 4-17 across the country during 2009 using 3D Body Imaging Scanners. The data gathered over the next year will provide a more sophisticated means of measuring and analysing children’s measurements. It will identify the differences in height and body shape between children of different ages and how much children have changed.
Tony Rosella, Programme Leader, Fashion at the University of Hertfordshire: “This is the first independent National Childrenswear Size Survey to take place using the very latest 3D body scanning technology. It is a very exciting and important study that will provide valuable data to improve our understanding of children’s growth rates and shape by size and age. Students from the BA Hons Fashion programme form part of the measuring team helping to gather the data. Data from the survey will provide an invaluable cutting edge insight for students to understand how 3D size and shape data can impact upon fashion design. We are proud to be part of a study where the next generation of designers will emerge with key creative and technical skills coupled with innovative technology.”
Over 750 children have already been measured for Shape GB in Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough. A number of other locations across the country will follow throughout 2009.
