First Class Honours For Courageous Student

Matthew King has graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a first class honours degree in Law despite suffering a serious injury in his first professional rugby game in 2004 which left him paralysed from the neck down.

While studying for his degree Matthew hasn’t let his disability get in the way of him enjoying student life. In 2008 he chaired one of the School of Law’s public lectures, where Alistair Burt MP was the guest speaker. During his studies Matthew obtained a range of work experience.

Kevin Rogers, University of Hertfordshire, Senior Lecturer in Law said: “Matthew has been an outstanding student during his time with us. I’m delighted that he will be continuing his studies at the University, and I’m confident he will go on to have a great career.”

Matthew, originally from Biggleswade, has decided to continue his studies with the University and started a Legal Practice Course in September.

Matthew is among the 4,300 new graduates who have celebrated academic success in St Albans this week. The annual Awards ceremony for the University of Hertfordshire took place at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban.
