English language and preparatory courses
We provide pre-entry programmes for international students at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level.
As part of this work we offer a range of short pre-sessional courses taught during both the summer and autumn terms for students who wish to improve their English before coming to study with us. We also offer in-sessional English for students who wish to brush up their language skills during their studies.
We also have a programme that is designed for international students to 'top-up' their qualification to an Honours degree.
Undergraduate programmes
International Foundation Programme (IFP)
The IFP prepares students who need to improve their English language and specialist subject skills, so that they can progress onto an undergraduate degree course at the University. If you successfully complete the IFP and meet all entry requirements, you will be guaranteed a place on your chosen degree course.

English for Academic Studies (EAS)
If you are an international student with good academic qualifications, but with a low level of English, this one year programme can help you to develop both your English language and study skills and enable you to progress to a wide range of degree courses at the University. The programme is designed to give you the confidence and knowledge that you will need in order to begin to study effectively in a new country. After successful completion of this programme you will be guaranteed a place on the degree course of your choice at the University.

Pre-sessional English

If you have not yet achieved the required English language level for entry to your chosen degree course, you will need to take one or more Pre-sessional English courses to help you reach the required level.

Postgraduate programmes
International Pre-master's
The Pre-master's prepares students for entry to a wide range of Master's degrees in Engineeing, Life Sciences and Computer Science, at the University. If you successfully complete the Pre-master's and meet all entry requirements, you will be guaranteed a place on your chosen degree course.

Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL)
This programme aims to develop your English language skills and gives an in-depth introduction to the teaching of English, providing a strong practical foundation for future development. A practical teaching element is a central feature of the programme: you will participate in practice teaching sessions throughout your studies.

BA (Hons) Mass Communications
You will learn problem solving skills, be able to evaluate evidence, arguments and communicate effectively. The skills you acquire will be relevant to a wide range of careers in communications and areas of media, journalism and related industries. The degree will also prepare you for postgraduate or further vocational study.
During the 3 years you will study 4 main subject areas: Journalism, Media Cultures, Film, and Digital Publishing and each year you will take 2 modules of each subject.

Entrance requirements
Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent and IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 575(235)
Diploma in Mass Communications
If you have an IELTs score of 6.0/TOEFL 213/550 you are eligible to take the HIBT Diploma in Mass Communications where you will initially study at the Hertfordshire International College of Business and Technology (HIBT) on the College Lane Campus of the University of Hertfordshire.
You will be taught by University tutors on the new de Havilland Campus and receive additional support in your studies from HIBT to ensure you have a good foundation for your future studies. Successful completion of the Diploma means you can progress to University of Hertfordshire, School of Humanities where, after a further 2 years of successful study, you will graduate with a BA (Hons) degree in Mass Communications.
The entry requirements for the HIBT Diploma in Mass Communications is successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent and IELTS 6.0 TOEFL 213/ 550. Entry requirements for the BA (Hons) degree in Mass Communications through this route are successful completion of the HIBT Diploma in Mass Communications and English Language assessment of IELTS grade 7.0 or equivalent.
