Notes for applicants

Which courses do the Chancellor's International Scholarships apply to?

All University of Hertfordshire full-time undergraduate degrees and postgraduate taught masters courses being studied on the university's campuses.

You are not eligible for the Scholarship if you are applying to study any of the following courses:

  • PhD
  • Pre-sessional English
  • English for Academic Studies
  • International Pre-Masters
  • Graduate Certificate in Business
  • Pre-LLM

If you are applying for the International Foundation Programme you may apply for the Scholarship if you have obtained high grades in your high school study and met the Scholarship English language requirement, please see the award criteria for further details.  

If you are studying on a University of Hertfordshire degree at an overseas partner you are eligible to apply for the Scholarship at the point of transfer to the University in the UK, during your first year of on-campus study only.

If you are studying at our partner college Hertfordshire International College (HIC) you are eligible to apply for the scholarship following completion of your studies with HIC. 

Who is eligible?

The scholarship is available for all new full-time students who have been assessed as international for fee purposes and who have been issued an offer to study at the University of Hertfordshire.

If you are a current undergraduate University of Hertfordshire student studying on-campus and have completed part of your degree you are not eligible to apply. 

If you have completed a University of Hertfordshire degree and are applying for postgraduate study at the University you are eligible to apply.

Candidates will be assessed on a competitive basis against the scholarship award criteria. There is no guarantee that students who meet the minimum requirements set out in the criteria will be successful in the overall competition.

How much are the Chancellor's International Scholarships worth?

Each scholarship is worth £2,000.

What should I write in the supporting statement?

In no more than 500 words you must explain why we should consider you for the Chancellor's International Scholarship. You should demonstrate:

  • Other achievements or involvement in extra-curricular activity

  • Relevant work experience

  • What you expect to gain from the opportunity of study at the University of Hertfordshire, and the contribution you will make to the University community

  • How you intend to use the experience and knowledge in the future and an outline of your career aspirations

How will my scholarship be awarded to me?

Scholarships will be awarded at registration as a fee deduction of £2,000 from your first year. The scholarship is not available for subsequent years of study.

The Chancellor's International Scholarship can be held in addition to either the Family or UH Graduate Scholarship and, if paying in full at registration, the £500 reduction for full payment.

Who decides and how will I find out the result?

The final decision will be made by a panel of University staff. Applicants will be notified of the result of their scholarship application no later than two weeks after the application deadline. All decisions made by the panel are final.

What do I do if I choose to defer my entry after I have been awarded a scholarship?

The scholarship is valid for the year you apply only. You must re-submit your application if you choose to defer your entry to another intake or if you change your programme of study.

What happens if I am currently studying and have not yet completed my qualifications?

Your scholarship application will be considered on the basis of your qualifications to date. If you are considered eligible, the scholarship will be provisionally awarded and you will be notified in writing of the grades you must continue to achieve. Please note that the academic conditions set for the scholarship may differ to those outlined in your conditional offer.

The Scholarship will not be finalised until you provide the University with evidence you have met the conditions set in your offer.

What happens if I am being sponsored?

You will need to send us a letter confirming who will be paying your tuition fees. If you are awarded the scholarship the amount will be deducted from the amount your sponsor pays to the University.
