Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes

International students outsideIf you have not yet achieved the required English language level for entry to your chosen degree course, you can join a Pre-sessional English route at the appropriate entry point for your English level. This will be your pathway to achieving the required English language level for your degree course.

These courses help you to develop your academic language and study skills so that you can study effectively at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.

In addition, you will be able to make friends and familiarise yourself with the university and its facilities.

Successful completion of the course means that you will not need to take another IELTS exam.

Aims

The Pre-sessional English course aims to develop your:

  • understanding of university lectures and seminars
  • note -taking skills
  • reading skills in relation to academic texts, such as, books and  journals
  • speaking skills in academic contexts, such as, seminars and presentations
  • pronunciation
  • academic writing style, vocabulary range and grammar accuracy
  • awareness of the appropriate structure for essays and reports

Which level of Pre-sessional English do you need?

Full details of the three different routes of Pre-sessional English we offer plus the entry requirements you need are available in the Pre-sessional English for September 2017 table.

We offer Pre-sessional English courses to feed into our degree intakes in both September and January. Our main intake is September but we also have a limited number of courses with a January start (this is detailed on individual course pages).

Pre-sessional English (Standard route)

Pre-sessional English Standard route is for students who need to reach an IELTS level of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each band (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

The majority of our undergraduate courses require you to have IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each band for entry, including courses in Creative Arts, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Criminology and Political Science, joint honours degrees and Life and Medical Sciences. The majority of postgraduate courses in Computer Science, Engineering and Law also require an IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each band for entry. We offer the following entry points if you need an IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each band:

  • If you have an IELTS of 4.5 (with no less than 4.0 in each band) you will need to do 15 weeks of English
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.0 (with no less than 4.5 in each band) you will need to do 11 weeks of  English
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.5 (with no less than 4.5 in each band) you will need to do 6 weeks of English

Pre-sessional English (Higher route)

Pre-sessional English Higher route is for students who need to reach an IELTS level of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in each band (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Undergraduate courses in Humanities require you to have IELTS 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in each band for entry. The majority of our postgraduate courses in Creative Arts, Business and Life and Medical Sciences also require an IELTS 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in each band for entry. We offer the following entry points if you need an IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each band:

  • If you have an IELTS of 4.5 (with no less than 4.0 in each band) you will need to do 18 weeks of English
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.0 (with no less than 4.5 in each band) you will need to do 14 weeks of  English
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.5 (with no less than 4.5 in each band) you will need to do 11 weeks of English
  • If you have an IELTS of 6.0 (with no less than 5.0 in each band) you will need to do 6 weeks of English

Pre-sessional English (Advanced route)

Pre-sessional English Advanced route is for students who need to reach an IELTS level of 7.0 with no less than 5.5 (or higher) in each band (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Most undergraduate courses in Health and Social Work require you to have IELTS 7.0  with no less than 6.5 or 7.0 in each band for entry. The majority of our postgraduate courses in Health and Social Work plus some in and Life and Medical Sciences also require an IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 or 7.0 in each band for entry. We offer the following entry points if you need an IELTS 7.0 with 5.5 or above in each band:

  • If you have an IELTS of 5.0 (with no less than 4.5 in each band) you will need to do 18 weeks of English
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.5 (with no less than 5.0 in each band) you will need to do 14 weeks of  English
  • If you have an IELTS of 6.0 (with no less than 5.0 in each band) you will need to do 11 weeks of English
  • If you have an IELTS of 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in each band) you will need to do 6 weeks of English

For courses that require higher individual scores in each band (6.5 or 7.0) the longer length Pre-sessional courses will be offered to enable you to get to the required level (depending on your current levels). The length of your Pre-sessional English course will be stated in your offer email from the University.   • MPharm (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band)
  • Master of Optometry (MOptom) (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.5 in each band)
  • BSc Nutrition (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band)
  • BSc Dietetics (IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in each band)
  • BSc Sports Therapy (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band)
