Outgoing study abroad

For UH students wishing to include a period of study abroad within their course...

Why study abroad?

Why study abroad? Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding and ‘life changing’ experiences to include within your course, and most courses at the University give you this opportunity.

Study abroad is a great chance to live in another country, to widen your cultural horizons and to make new contacts and friendships. It will broaden your education, giving you new perspectives, and enabling you to study new and different subjects from those at UH, as well as experiencing a new teaching and learning environment. Living in another country will also help you develop personally in terms of your own self awareness, maturity and confidence.

More importantly, studying abroad will enhance your employability, giving you a competitive edge and setting you apart in the graduate job market. A recent survey by i-Graduate, an independent research organisation, showed ‘around 60% of the country’s top employers indicate that experience of international study enhances employability’.

Of course, it studying abroad will also enable you to develop your language skills amongst native speakers. Again research shows being able to speak a foreign language will not only help you get a job on graduation, but you will generally start with a higher salary.

The chance to study abroad and , experience and adjust to a new and unique environment is a once in a lifetime opportunity that shouldn't be missed. I loved every second I studied at UNCW and forged friendships and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

How can I participate?

Study abroad is open to full time students on most of our undergraduate courses. You will need to have satisfactorily completed your previous year of study, and in some cases, you may asked to achieve certain grades. Being able to study abroad is also subject to both sufficient places being available at our partner universities and to suitable modules being available.

You can study abroad in the second or placement year of your course. In the placement year, it may be combined with a work placement. In general, study abroad to Europe is for one semester or the whole year, whilst study abroad outside of Europe is for the whole year. You will need to check the opportunities available to you on your own course.

You can obtain an application pack from the European and Study Abroad Office, in person at room M016, de Havilland,or by email request at studyabroad@herts.ac.uk. The closing dates for Europe are end of October for study abroad in Semester B and mid March for study abroad in Semester A, and for outside of Europe mid January for both semesters.
