Study abroad in Europe

For UH students studying abroad in Europe...

Where can I go?

We have partnerships with over 60 universities in Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

In Europe, study abroad is organised through the European Union’s Erasmus programme with partnerships between faculties within institutions. We have partnerships in the following subject areas: art and design, aeronautical engineering, automotive engineering, astronomy, biosciences, business, computer science, environmental science, geography, humanities, midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy, social work and tourism. If you are a student on Joint Honours, you can study abroad in one of your two subject areas.

Do I earn credit for study abroad?

You complete a learning agreement (setting out the modules you will be taking), which is signed by you, your programme tutor at UH and the coordinator at the partner institution. You will receive credit for modules you take at the partner institution, and these will be expressed as ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) and so can be transferred and interpreted easily.

Do I need a language?

You do not need a language to study abroad. However, one of the obvious benefits of studying abroad is that it gives you the opportunity to take a language or to improve your language skills. We offer four European languages, French, German, Italian and Spanish, which on some courses may be taken as part of the course, but if not you can take a language at UH on an extra curricular basis. Nevertheless, many of our partners in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Hungary and Poland, and some in France, Germany and Spain, offer courses taught in English.

What will it cost me and what grants are available?

If you spend a full academic year at a partner university and you are an EU national, you pay no tuition fees to UH or the partner university. If you study abroad for part of a year, you will pay tuition fees to UH, but none to the partner university. If the period of study abroad forms part of the placement year (and you may want to combine it with a work placement), you currently pay no tuition fees to UH or the partner university.

However in all cases, you will need to pay for travel, accommodation and living costs, but you will still be eligible to receive any grant or loan to which you are normally entitled.

In addition, you will be eligible for a grant under the Erasmus programme to help towards living and travel costs. The amount you receive will depend on the length of stay, the country and year in which you study abroad. To qualify for an Erasmus grant, you must be a national of an EU country, an EEA country or EU candidate country, or be a permanent resident of one of them. You must have also completed at least one year of full time study, and study abroad for a period of between three and twelve months, and to not have previously received an Erasmus grant.
