The HESIAN research agenda
HESIAN is a 'research hub'. That means that we are interested both in collecting and sharing information about relevant research, and in carrying out our own research work. Our research agenda includes:
- Research into the effectiveness of solution-focused, interaction and narrative practices
- Exploring an enactivist and non-representational account of 'talking therapies'. What is going on when two people sit down to talk, from an enactive perspective?
- How can therapeutic treatment be viewed as changing 'affordances'? In particular, how do the interactional and solution-focused practices work with affordances?
- In support of 2. above, exploring an enactive and non-representational account of human memory. The fact that I can remember what my front door looks like doesn't mean I carry a representation of it around in my head – but what does it mean?
- Also in support of 2. above, exploring an account of mental illness as social and interactional rather than 'mental', 'internal', or 'brain-based'. We seek to expand on the 'interactional view' of John Weakland, Paul Watzlawick and colleagues and examine what happens if we take cognition/perception to be interaction rather than computation.
- How might we connect the 'interactional' schools of practice (solution-focused, narrative, social constructionist etc) with an enactive theoretical perspective?
This agenda has implications and potential benefit for many field including psychiatry, therapy, nursing, education, coaching, management and social work.

HESIAN research projects
We are seeking both to start new work and connect with existing work in this area. Projects currently in progress are:
Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust: Project to study using solution-focused communication to support recovery. All staff who come into contact with service users (including facilities, canteen and maintenance staff as well as care professionals) are being trained to engage in solution-focused communication, on the principle that 'every interaction can make a difference'. We intend to measure the cumulative impact both on service users and staff.
