de Havilland Philharmonic Mayfest Concert
Music
Stravinsky Symphonies of Wind Instruments
Bartok Divertimento for Strings
Nielsen Symphony No. 5
Robin Browning Conductor
The de Havilland Philharmonic’s Mayfest concert showcases the different sections of the Orchestra.
The wind sections of the de Havilland Philharmonic take centre stage for Stravinsky’s ‘Symphonies of Wind Instruments’ which was composed in 1920. After this, it is the turn of the strings who will shine in Bartok’s ‘Divertimento for Strings’; a three-movement work which features vibrant string writing with sharp contrasts and an impressive three-voice fugue. Both sections of the orchestra join forces in Neilsen’s ‘Symphony No.5’ to battle against the percussion section.
Written just two years after the Stravinsky’s ‘Symphonies of Wind Instruments’, Neilsen’s fifth symphony is a vast battle between order and chaos. The conflict between a seemingly autonomous snare drummer and the orchestra ends with a gloriously exciting finale.
