Britannia: 2013-1981: Laura Oldfield Ford

Visual Arts

Taking the urban riots of 1981 as her starting point Laura Oldfield Ford will use the practice of ‘Chorography’ – a process developed by the ancient geographer Ptolemy intended to provide views as well as maps – to record the lines of social antagonism in urban areas which have been subjected to renewal schemes.

Using her highly worked drawing practice Ford will focus on the post war new towns of Harlow, Stevenage and Hatfield looking at how the planned uses of the urban environment were subverted at a moment of crisis and how the efforts to subsequently ‘design out dissent’ have been resisted.
