Speaker

The Right Honourable Sir Anthony Hooper, after some 12 years teaching in law schools both here and in Canada, practiced criminal law in England and Wales for over 20 years. Appointed to the High Court in 1995, he presided over a number of important criminal trials, including the first trial of those alleged to be responsible for the death of Damilola Taylor and the trial of the two police officers alleged to be responsible for the 1989 Hillsborough disaster leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans. In 2004 he was appointed to the Court of Appeal and divides his time equally between the Criminal and Civil Division. He is heavily involved with the Criminal Procedure Rule Committee.

Prior to the Criminal Justice Act 2003 he lectured in favour of major changes to the laws of evidence in criminal cases and he has in recent public speeches developed the theme that the many changes in criminal law and procedure over the last 20 years have forced defendants to become participants, rather than merely spectators, in their criminal trials. He is, with Professor David Ormerod, general editor of Blackstone's Criminal practice.

1 CPD Point will be available to any barristers or solicitors who attend (The School of Law’s SRA CPD reference is LT.UHER.)
