The Charrette Design Team

The charrette was led by Andres Duany, who is considered one of the world’s pre-eminent planners, and who lectures on urban development and regeneration internationally.

Mr. Duany has designed more than 300 communities across the U.S. and Europe, and has significant experience in regional planning, most recently designing the new town of Tornagrain in Scotland. He has also offered regional planning advice to cities and Counties across the U.S., and served as an advisor in the rebuilding of coastal Louisiana and Mississippi after hurricane Katrina.

Mr. Duany first visited Hertfordshire as the 2007 Chancellor’s Lecturer, and spoke to a group of University officials and community leaders about growth patterns in the U.S. and means of encouraging sensitive development in the County.

The Charrette team also featured a group of UK-based planners and designers, including environmental consultants from the Watford-based Building Research Establishment (BRE).

The BRE is one of the world’s leading environmental and sustainability consulting organisations specialising in engineering, design, construction, and other elements related to the built environment.

Origin of the term 'Charrette'

The term Charrette is derived from the French word for 'little cart'.

The French word, "charrette" means "cart" and is often used to describe the final, intense work effort expended by art and architecture students to meet a project deadline.

This use of the term is said to originate from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris during the 19th century, where proctors circulated a cart, or “charrette”, to collect final drawings while students frantically put finishing touches on their work.
