Teaching methods

The aim of this programme is to further develop existing skills and knowledge to create a Youth Worker. These will include increasing critical thinking and reflection; recognition and application of appropriate leadership and management skills; research awareness and process. All of these elements help to develop confidence in each learner in presenting information to colleagues and peers and confirming the individual's high levels of expertise when working with young people.

Core Modules

  • Meeting Individual Needs of Young People

This is a work-based learning module that focuses on the student s face to face work with young people. It will help to develop the skills and understanding needed to work effectively with young people and support their informal learning. Through small-scale work students will plan and implement community engagement with young people and reflect on the effectiveness of this activity on developing relationships within groups of young people.

  • Young People's Development

The module will focus on the development of young people. The emphasis will be on developing the students' knowledge and understanding of personal, social, emotional, physical, intellectual, cognitive and spiritual development. The module will draw on small-scale investigations using observations, in order to promote understanding and implementation of evidence-based and ethical practice relevant to the professional area. It offers opportunities for students to observe, assess and reflect on individual young people's holistic development and to consider how to develop their practice. The intention is that by the end of the module students will be able to reflect on their own effectiveness and how they apply their knowledge of development when working with young people.

  • Young People: Fulfilling Legal and Professional Responsibilities

Youth Work is central to enabling young people to play a part in society and therefore it is important that youth workers understand and are able to demonstrate an ability to work within the fameworks of legislation and guidance. Therefore this module aims to develop knowledge and understanding underpinning the transferable skills relevant to youth workers working in the Children's Workforce and to develop the students' ability to work within a framework of legislation and guidance. Interpersonal skills and awareness of equality of opportunity, anti-discriminatory practice and children's rights and health and safety are features of the module.

  • Youth Worker Personal and Professional Development

The central focus of this module will be to develop students' ability to develop their study and graduate skills to enable them to be successful in Higher Education and to take responsibility for identifying training and development needs. Students will be encouraged to use a range of strategies and appropriate evidence to audit their existing competencies and resources. Feedback from a variety of sources, including self-assessment tools and professional colleagues and relevant others, will be sought and used for personal, professional and workplace development. Subsequently the audit will be used to underpin an action plan for the development of the identified areas for development as an aspect of a career plan. The module aims to develop those transferable ICT skills to support their own development.
