If you're interested in a career in the rapidly expanding tourism industry, this course gives you the skills and experience you need to build your career in this dynamic and challenging sector. You have the option to take a work placement, to study a language and to go on field trips to places such as Thailand, the Gambia and Spain, all of which build up your experience and will give you a head start in the job market when you graduate.
This established vocational degree affords you a balanced view of tourism as a business. You gain an appreciation of the dynamic and complex nature of tourism and the challenges that face destination managers and governments. A key feature is the opportunity to participate in study visits and field trips to a number of tourism destinations. This allows you to observe and comment on tourism developments, and to conduct research. Recent visits include the Gambia, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia and domestically Bristol, London and Liverpool and Scotland.
Work placement
As with all courses at the Business School students have the opportunity to complete a work placement, which will usually last for one year. During this time you will be employed by the company and will subsequently be paid; for students on placement in 2005/2006 salaries have ranged from £11,500 - £14000.

Careers
Seventy eight per cent of graduates from Tourism degrees have gone into employment straight from university, with a further eleven per cent going on to further study. Graduates have found employment in roles such as charter flight coordinator, conference coordinator, customer relations executive, management trainee, marketing administrator, project manager, resort representative, sales executive, tourism development officer, travel consultant and yield controller with major companies such as:

Teaching methods
Alongside traditional teaching methods of lectures, seminars and tutorials, the University operates a web-based student support system called StudyNet where you can expect to find a range of material and communications about every module.
The teaching method for most modules on the course is a one hour lecture followed by a one hour seminar. Typically, a new topic will be introduced in each lecture. The seminars provide an opportunity to discuss and obtain feedback on the topic introduced in the previous week's lecture. Usually, assessment is split between coursework and examination. Coursework may take a variety of forms and could be individual or group work
