Who should attend this course?

The Theory and practice of contraception and sexual health course is suitable for all nurses or midwives working in a sexual health setting or in a Women’s Health Service.

Course content

The aims of the Theory and practice of contraception and sexual health course are to enable you to:

  • Develop theoretical knowledge and gain competence and confidence in the management and provision of contraceptive services
  • Gain an understanding of the impact of legal and ethical factors that can arise in a variety of health care settings

This course is designed to enable you to apply theoretical concepts to the practice of contraception and reproductive sexual health.

It gives you the opportunity to observe, discuss and participate in client care in both general practice and community clinics, as these are available.

It includes two clinical placements and specialist visits, a total of 40 hours of clinical practice in a Family Planning Clinic.

Assessment

The assessment consists of a Practice Based Assessment (PBA), an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a workbook.
