About the course

This course is based around sports coaching, sport and fitness development and sport-related management. If you're hoping to work in the sports and leisure industry, you'll benefit from its strong emphasis on practical, work-based learning.

You'll take coaching modules at the outstanding Hertfordshire Sports Village on the de Havilland Campus at the University of Hertfordshire and have the opportunity to gain additional coaching awards.

Entry requirements...

120 points, including one GCE A level or equivalent, plus GCSEs at grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science and an interest in sport.

 The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Applied Science will be accepted in place of a GCSE in Science as well as the Scottish, International Baccalaureate and Irish equivalents plus an interest in sport.

Teaching methods

Coaching units will be delivered at the outstanding Hertfordshire Sports Village on the de Havilland Campus at the University of Hertfordshire. The course is aimed at students who wish to work in the sports and leisure industry. There will also be a strong emphasis on work-based learning.

Year 1

Core Modules

  • Fundamentals of Sports Development

    This module will provide students with an insight into the emerging importance and growth of sports development, and the role it plays in promoting sport and exercise both nationally and locally. Students will research specific initiatives to appreciate their significance to the sporting community.

  • Introduction to Sports Coaching

    The module will introduce the concept of sports coaching and the underpinning principles and theories involved in the coaching process. These theories will be reinforced through practical sessions and coach shadowing. Students will be required to produce an action plan for their own development following the coach shadowing process, identifying relevant vocational qualifications in order to improve their development.

    This module will examine organic systems within the human body and explain how the systems are used in sport and exercise. Learning will take place through lectures and laboratory practicals supported by seminars in order to deliver theoretical knowledge and allow students to demonstrate understanding in relation to practical settings.

Students will develop the ability to analyse test results and make recommendations to their subjects.

The learner will be made aware of specific internal managerial processes, and develop capabilities of relating them to a sports scenario.

    Utilising a real world contemporary sporting environment, students will develop an understanding of how marketing works, using research to develop realistic solutions to marketing challenges. Students will also consider the importance of events within the sports industry and investigate the different strategic plans formulated when managing large scale events.

    This module will allow the students to understand how the sport science sub-disciplines of nutrition and psychology can be used by sports coaches to help support and improve performance. This will include explaining the functions of the different nutrients and identifying the nutritional strategies that can be used by performers. Students will also investigate psychological theories and strategies that can be applied to sports performance settings.

The skills to be assessed are: Autonomy, Group working, Communication (written and oral), Problem solving, Numeracy, Information management, Self-evaluation and reflective practice
