Counselling

The counselling team brings a wide range of expertise to the teaching and learning experience, as practising counsellors, psychotherapists, supervisors and researchers. Their research interests lie in eating disorders, dance movement therapy, cultural issues, phenomenology and discourse analysis.

The MA / PgD in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling provides both a training that is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and an opportunity to achieve competence in practitioner research. The theoretical orientation of this programme is pluralistically psychodynamic. Students will be encouraged to develop their own individual and reflexive way of working. Particular attention will be paid to social and cultural values that underpin counselling theories and practitioners, to the social and cultural contexts in which counselling takes place and is how these relate to both counsellor and client.

The popular Cert HE / University Diploma in Counselling is a 2 year, part-time 3 hours per week programme which runs either in the evening or in the morning. Direct entry for year two is encouraged for students with equivalent training to year one. The programme provides an introduction to the theory and practice of counselling through a variety of approaches, with particular reference to the psychodynamic and person-centered approaches.

In addition to professional practice training the team offers short courses such as:

  • An Introduction to Counselling / Psychotherapy (3 hours per week for 10 weeks) is available in September, January and April.

Continuing Professional Development

The team has developed a range of CPD courses for Counsellors, Psychotherapists and those in related fields. These include:
