Short Courses Consultancy
Science Training Centre
The STC offers short courses in the Biosciences and Environmental Management and draws on the expertise of over seventy five highly qualified and experienced staff. Many of the laboratory courses are undertaken in the School of Life Sciences and are established training courses that run annually.
Intensive training in laboratory techniques are available, and can be run either in a company's laboratories or at the University. The STC has run a number of intensive laboratory courses such as molecular biology techniques for pharmacologists from local industry. Recently established courses include RNA Extraction & Analysis, PCR Techniques & Applications and Nucleic Acids and Protein Bioinformatics.
Professional update lecture courses are held one evening per week for between three and nine weeks, and are based at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield College Lane Campus. These provide the opportunity for personnel from local companies to attend courses from introductory to advanced level. These courses are principally aimed at local participants who can travel to Hatfield for a 6.00pm start.

Biodeterioration Centre
Environmental Monitoring and Microbiological Testing of Water and Fuel
Biodet can give expert advice on all aspects of environmental monitoring, including specialist areas such as the investigation of air quality in the workplace and the investigation of sick building syndrome. The centre is also a leading authority on the microbiology of domestic and industrial water systems and microbial spoilage of aviation fuel. We are currently expanding our capabilities for undertaking food related tests, in particular those concerned with contamination from bacteria such as Salmonella.
Facilities
Our recently refurbished bioscience facilities include a number of large modern dedicated teaching laboratories, with the latest equipment for biological analysis, sport and exercise science and geographical studies. Dedicated biosciences research facilities also include laboratories for nucleic acid analysis, fermentation biotechnology, cell culture, molecular biology and pharmacology.
Many of the facilities are also equipped with high speed internet access for bioinformatics teaching. In particular there are excellent facilities for chemical and biomedical analysis, genetics and cell biology studies and students have access to the latest equipment for chemical synthesis and purification, PCR , qPCR and 2D protein gel analysis systems for use during their final year projects.
