Science Training Centre
Short courses
The Science Training Centre (STC) offers short courses in the Biosciences and Environmental Management and draws on the expertise of over seventy five highly qualified and experienced staff.
Many of the laboratory courses are undertaken in the School of Life Sciences and are established training courses that run annually.
Intensive training in laboratory techniques is available, and can be run either in a company's laboratories or at the University.
In-house courses
Courses are tailored to a company's needs. Timing is flexible. A typical in-house course is available for audiences of 10-20 participants. University staff can deliver 2-3 hour lectures per week. Duration of courses varies depending on the subject matter and can range from 3 weeks to 25 weeks.

Laboratory training
The STC has run a number of intensive laboratory courses such as molecular biology techniques for pharmacologists from local industry.
Recently established courses include:

Biodeterioration Centre Environmental Monitoring and Microbiological Testing of Water and Fuel
Biodet can give expert advice on all aspects of environmental monitoring, including specialist areas such as the investigation of air quality in the workplace and the investigation of sick building syndrome.
The centre is also a leading authority on the microbiology of domestic and industrial water systems and microbial spoilage of aviation fuel.
We are currently expanding our capabilities for undertaking food related tests, in particular those concerned with contamination from bacteria such as Salmonella.
