Undergraduate courses

To study law as an LLB student at the University of Hertfordshire is to enter a dynamic, modern and versatile approach to your legal education. Our law degree programme reflects the changing face of the profession and gives you a sound grounding in the traditional and compulsory substantive areas of English law but also provides you with the opportunity to tailor make elements of your degree to suit your own interests and strengths. You can pick several different areas of law or develop specialist knowledge in one particular area e.g. commercial law.

We offer two routes to study for the LLB Bachelor of Law degree - 3 years full time and 4 years part time. Both routes are recognised by the Bar Council and Law Society as providing full exemption from the academic stage of training for those of our students who want to go on to become legal professionals.

From the moment you embark on your programme of study we will be focusing your education on you and your ultimate goals and ambitions. Our aim throughout the LLB (Honours) programme is not only to engage you with your academic studies and ensure that you leave with the requisite academic qualifications, but that when you leave, those studies make you marketable in an ever increasingly competitive market place. To that end you will have demonstrable work related skills embedded within the curriculum as well as excellent careers education support.

The School of Law has its own Law Clinic which allows students to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom, applying academic learning to real life cases. Student volunteers have the chance to deal with legal issues affecting real people, including employment, benefit and housing problems, consumer and family law. If you become involved in the Law Clinic you will complete a short period of training from experienced solicitors and be asked to dedicate around 3-4 hours a week each semester. However, the transferable skills that you will gain through interviewing, drafting, working as part of a team, and benefiting the local community, will prove to be invaluable.

The School of Law has its own court room which provides the venue for both our internal and external mooting competitions. Members of the School of Law's debating society were invited by Channel 4 (TV) to participate in a televised debate relating to the General Election. In addition, the School hosts a public lecture series to which the regional legal community is invited, so maintaining links between the University and the legal community. Recent speakers have included Lord Harry Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice of England, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robin Auld, Court of Appeal, and Lord Nicholas Addison Phillips, the current Lord Chief Justice of England.

Two dedicated careers tutors will provide individual guidance and support throughout your undergraduate studies. From the moment you arrive in the School you will, through your curriculum studies, be focused on finding and managing your own individual career path and achieving your potential. The School regularly hosts Careers Fairs with invited speakers and has its own LLB Careers Education booklet. Look at our e-Newsletter for details of recent School of Law news items.
