Undergraduate subjects
The Humanities Programme is very flexible and allows you to explore a range of subjects or to specialise. You can choose to graduate with a single, joint or combined honours degree. Combined degrees can be made up of two or three subjects, if you wish to study four subjects you can opt for a Humanities Degree. You can study as a full-time or part-time student.
In the first year of the programme you are encouraged to take up subjects you may not have had the opportunity to study before. Even if you intend to graduate with a single honours degree you will have to study at least one other subject in the first year. This way you gain a wider range of graduate skills making you more attractive to prospective employers.
If you are following the honours degree programme you study eight modules each year for three years. A module is a course of study that usually lasts one semester. The module is delivered in weekly lectures and seminars or in workshop sessions, depending on the subject.
In the first year, History, English Literature, English Language & Communication and Philosophy all offer four modules. The other subjects offer two modules a year, except for languages, which offers more to allow for different levels of study. You may only study two modules of a language each year and you may only take one language as part of your degree.
After the introductory first year each subject area requires that you study the modules in a progressive order. This means that you cannot pick up a subject that you have not studied previously, therefore the more subjects you study in the first year, the wider the choice you have later on.
In the second and third years History, English Literature, English Language & Communication and Philosophy offer between eight and sixteen modules, giving you more choice to specialise as you progress in your studies.
You may wish to apply to take a year in the USA or in Europe at the end of your second year.
When you graduate, the class of your degree depends on the grades you achieve in the second and third year of study.
