The Department of Philosophy is a very supportive environment to pursue intellectual interests. It has an excellent reputation for research. It was awarded a grade of 4 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, indicating levels of recognized national and international excellence. After an intensive university-wide review in 2003, involving external peer assessments and statistical benchmarking, it emerged as one of the University’s six priority areas for research. In 2007, it made six new appointments giving it a renewed basis to consolidate its strengths and to pursue new avenues of research.
