New Media Publishing

New Media Publishing offers courses in technology and skills needed for printed media and on-screen (web-based and video) media. Students will gain hands-on training by creating and producing independent and team lead projects for print and screen-based media.

The aim of the programme is for students to develop critical and applied understanding of the techniques and theories of contemporary publishing.

We offer modules in: Introduction to New Media Publishing, Web Animation, Design for Print, Video Storytelling and Web Design.

There’s a real growth area in media-related jobs and a shortage of computer literate, technically able graduates who can not only create layouts for print-based publications, but also produce quality web-based publishing using animation and video streaming.

New Media Publishing combines well with Journalism, English Literature and Media. This is very much a practical media course and will benefit those students wishing to go into careers in publishing, media, journalism and PR. At the end of your course, you’ll have a portfolio of work to show your prospective employers. Some of our students have been employed by Pearson Education Publishing, the largest publishing company in Europe, thanks to their editorial and production skills, eye for detail, computer literacy, knowledge of publishing software and ability to work to deadlines.

Examples of what is studied in the first year:

Introduction to New Media Publishing

This module provides foundation computing, communication and graduate skills for future study in Digital Publishing. Those with relatively little computing experience are welcome on the module, whilst those with prior knowledge are given the opportunity of enhancing and extending that knowledge.

Module content includes an investigation of general issues relating to digital publishing such as e-books, hyperfiction, writing and publishing in the digital age and the role of the Internet. Practical skills developed include the production of presentations and the use of digital cameras and scanners and image manipulation software (currently Adobe Photoshop). Successful students will have a knowledge of on-screen design issues and be able to work effectively in a team.

Teaching methods include on-line lectures and workshops. Assessment is by coursework only. Students discuss background content via a bulletin board, work on a group electronic presentation and produce a final project report.

Digital Publishing equips students with vocational skills which will be attractive to future employers and is an ideal choice taken with subjects such as English Literature, English Language and Communication, Journalism and Media Studies. Enhanced computer skills enhance performance in all Humanities subjects. Past students have used their skills to enter professions such as web editing and ICT teaching.

Web Animation

This module provides experience in the creation of computer animations which should prove useful in subsequent New Media Publishing modules. Those with relatively little computing experience are welcome whilst those with prior knowledge are given the opportunity of enhancing and extending that knowledge.

Module content includes the development of animations skills using an animation package (currently Macromedia Flash), the construction of storyboards and the creation of a basic website. Students on the module also learn the principles and terminology of digital animation. More time is spent on on-screen design principles and on the production of appropriate graphics within a graphics manipulation program (currently Adobe Photoshop).

Teaching methods include tutor demonstration and workshops. Assessment is by coursework only. Students produce a storyboard and two animations.

Web Animation helps students develop their creativity and design skills, enhancing their performance in other Humanities subjects and increasing employability. The animations which are produced are added to a portfolio which can be shown to potential employers.
