English Literature
The English Literature Group at the University of Hertfordshire is a vibrant teaching area and research group. We offer a variety of single and joint honours undergraduate degrees, as well as taught and research postgraduate programmes. In the national student survey we achieved an overall satisfaction score of 83%.
The English undergraduate programme is a wide-ranging one, covering Renaissance literature to the present day. It incorporates the major literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama - but we also offer modules on cinematic adaptations of literary text and on creative writing. All members of staff are engaged in research projects; many have international reputations in their field. This commitment to scholarly activity means that both our undergraduate provision and our taught postgraduate provision are informed by up-to-date scholarship in English studies. English is a varied and flexible subject and the diverse interests of the staff - Shakespeare, crime fiction, American writing, Victorian Liteature, science fiction, contemporary poetry - provide an exciting range of options.
Staff have also worked closely with the national Subject Centre for English , established by the Higher Education Funding Council of England, which has responsibility for encouraging innovation and best practice in the teaching of English in Higher Education throughout the UK.
We welcome applications from students with an enthusiasm for literature who are prepared to be challenged and think critically about the texts they study.
