Creative Writing

MA Creative Writing - New for 2012

The MA in Creative Writing offers you the chance to develop your writing and stimulate your imagination through intensive craft workshops and one-to-one supervision.

Writers can produce fiction, poetry, drama or creative nonfiction on the MA.

The workshop modules and supervision will lead to the production of your dissertation in the genre of your choice. In addition to the workshop modules, the MA will focus on the experience of writing with and writing about communities.

In semester B of the full time programme (and semester B year 2 of the part-time programme), you will receive practical training in liaising with community partners, organising community projects and running creative events. This will culminate in real-world experience, as you organise and run your own small-scale project in collaboration with a community group.

The University has existing links to organisations such as museums, libraries, archives and schools in Hertfordshire, but you may also choose to work with a group that is already known to you.

General information on Creative Writing at UH

Creative Writing is one of several subjects offered by the School of Humanities which focuses on communications and communications issues through a range of media, enabling you to acquire theoretical knowledge and understanding as well as practical skills. These subjects also offer effective complementary studies to the single and major disciplines - English Literature, History, Philosophy and English Language and Communication - and the concern these disciplines have with the production and communication and presentation of ideas.

The creative writing courses are taught by published and practised writers (novelists, poets and dramatists). Overall, our aim is to introduce you to experience of creative writing via a range of core modules which involve a wide range of literary texts, genres (short stories, plays, poems) and practical approaches to writing, whilst offering you the opportunity to pursue a topic of particular interest via the final year independent project.
