The overseas trained teacher programme
The overseas trained teacher programme [ottp]
Welcome to the website for the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme as offered by the Hertfordshire Regional Partnership [HRP] at the University of Hertfordshire.
This section provides a brief answer to a few of the most frequently asked questions about the Programme. For more detailed information please download the Handbook of Guidance which gives advice for prospective applicants as well as guidance for those who are allocated places. The Application Form can also be downloaded but must be completed in the light of the wider guidance provided in the Handbook.
The programme is regularly revised and it is important that teachers and schools applying to this programme are aware of current requirements relating to the application procedure, application deadlines, interview arrangements and costs. These are provided on this website.
Who is the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme for?
The OTTP is for teachers qualified in another country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to gain Qualified Teacher Status in England.
What are the entry requirements for the OTT Programme?
Applicants need to have the following educational qualifications:
- GCSE Grade C or above in certain subjects (see Handbook and Application Form)
- A relevant degree or equivalent
- A teaching qualification recognised in the country of origin
- A teacher licence or registration from countries where it applies
To be eligible for a place, applicants must already be working as a teacher in a school within the area covered by the Hertfordshire Regional Partnership.
How is an application made?
We provide a joint application form to be completed by an Overseas Trained Teacher and the school in which they are employed. All sections of the application form need to be completed. It is essential that copies of several key documents are included with the application. This is made clear on the form.
Are there different assessment routes?
Yes, the Programme is designed to meet varying assessment needs. These are explained in the Handbook.
What are the costs for OTTP places?
There is an administration cost to all schools of £340 for all successful applicants. We can allocate a certain number of TDA funded places each year. When those are used the same level of support can still be offered for School-financed places. Details are in the Handbook.
How are places allocated on the OTTP?
For this academic year there are application deadlines for three different start points. Dates are also given below for the next application rounds.
September 2011 Programme:
Application Deadline – Monday 20th June 2011
Briefing / Interview date –Tuesday 19th July 2011
Preliminary Visit – during September 2011
End of Programme – no later than July 2012
January 2012 Programme:
Application Deadline – Monday 14th November 2011
Briefing / Interview date –Tuesday 6th December (am) 2011
Preliminary Visit – during January 2012
End of Programme – no later than December 2012
April 2012 Programme:
Dates for a programme starting in the Summer Term will be added if there is sufficient demand. This will be in the light of any changes implemented by the Department for Education.
How are teachers assessed on the OTTP?
In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) applicants must demonstrate that they have met the Professional Standards for Teachers at the QTS level. For experienced teachers a second level of assessment for the Core Standards can be completed at the same time leading to ‘Exemption from Induction.’ The Final Assessment day is rigorous and in line with assessments made on other training programmes leading to Qualified Teacher Status in England.
What support is needed from the school?
It is essential that applicants have the full support of the school in which they are working, including the commitment of a Teacher Mentor who is familiar with the Standards. Their role will include mentor meetings and lesson observations. This support is a requirement during the time of the programme.
How can I find a teaching post?
The Hertfordshire Regional Partnership is not able to link Overseas Trained Teachers with schools. To find a teaching post you may approach schools directly, apply for posts advertised in local newspapers or the Times Educational Supplement, or contact the teacher recruitment office of the Local Authority where you want to work.
