Routes into teaching
The University of Hertfordshire is a leading regional provider of Initial Teacher Training. Consistently high achieving in its Ofsted inspections and in the Guardian and Times League tables it is recognised as a very good quality training provider by local employers and graduate employability is amongst the highest in the country.
If you wish to train to be a teacher you will need to meet certain requirements. You will need to demonstrate a sincere desire to teach and will need to have spent some time in a classroom observing and ensuring that it is the right career choice. - Applicants with any honours degree (minimum of 2.2.) can apply to the Maths course, only if they have A level Maths. Without A level Maths their application will not be considered.
- Modern Foreign Languages
Applicants could apply to train to teach any of the following:
French
French with Spanish
French with German
German with French
Applicants for whom French is their native language can apply with any honours degree
- Science
Applicants who are interested in joining our course need to apply to one of the following Science areas:
Biology
Physics
Chemistry
However they will be expected to teach the above 3 science areas in secondary schools. Applicants with Biology degree will not be considered for interview unless they have A level Physics or Chemistry .

Employment Based Routes into Teaching
The Hertfordshire Regional Partnership (HRP), is an accredited provider of Employment Based Routes (EBR) for teacher training leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The Partnership incorporates the University of Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire Local Authority, Harrow Council and Partnership schools. It is based in the School of Education at the University of Hertfordshire
The majority of the training takes place in the school context and trainees are employed by the schools as unqualified teachers for the duration of their training and are not students of the university.
These training routes are:
Courses for Teaching and Other Assistants
This course is intended for Classroom Assistants working with children in Primary schools or Secondary schools.
This course is intended for those Specialist Teacher Assistants who have successfully completed either a Specialist Teacher Assistant course or the CSF Professional Assistants Certificate. This is a valuable new opportunity to gain a nationally recognised degree qualification.
