What is the task?

Playing the role of entrepreneurs you must record your idea for a new product or service in one of the following areas

  • Environmental and sustainability – business opportunities for green technology
  • Emerging technology – exploring the potential for innovative new products
  • Co-operative business – using John Lewis Partnership as exemplars come up with a good business model that empowers all staff
  • Food businesses – create a business model which can effectively counter the impending food shortage crisis

Your Aim

Your team needs to gain the backing of the judges who will take on the role of investors. Think about how much money you need and what it will be used for.

Stage 1

Record your two-minute presentation and send it in to our judging panel. We will judge good ideas and sound understanding over a cinematic masterpiece with weak content.

Send your presentation to:

Your video will be uploaded to the University of Hertfordshire Young Enterprise channel

Stage 2

Finalists will be invited to make a live five-minute presentation to our judging panel in front of an audience of other contestants, teachers and fellow students.

You will be asked to provide some supporting documentation to be judged in conjunction with your presentation.

You will also be able to display associated branding, packaging and promotional literature at the final.

What are we looking for?

There are five key judging criteria

  • Strength of the idea – is it innovative and realistic?
  • Evidence of research – who is your market and competition?
  • Operational plan – how are you going manage price, market and staffing?
  • Finance – how will you spend the investment and what is your projected return?
  • The pitch – how well you present your idea

You may like to include some of the following in your pitch:

  • A description of the business idea
  • The Market – who will your customers be and what is the market environment like?
  • Who your competitors are and how you differ from them
  • The price of your product
  • Where your product will be sold and how you plan to get it there
