About the School

At the Business School real-life work experience is an essential part of preparing our graduates for career success in today’s dynamic business world.

  • Delivering innovative degree courses for almost a quarter of a century. We are now the University’s largest school.
  • Research-led curricula, with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and employability, give students a head start in competitive national and international job markets.
  • By taking cutting-edge business theory out of the lecture theatre and into the workplace we have helped hundreds of companies to improve performance.
  • Leading experts within their fields have helped our students enrich their learning.

Learning Environment

Our state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment on the University’s de Havilland campus is part of Hatfield Business Park, a four million square feet commercial development.

Here around 3,200 students are taking undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses from eight subject areas - accounting and finance, business analysis and statistics, strategic management, economics, human resource management, information systems and project management, marketing and tourism, hospitality and event management.

Our flexible courses allow study on a full-time or part-time basis. Students taking either a combined modular course, a joint honours or interdisciplinary degree may include Business School courses to enhance their career. Options are flexible - linking business with law or psychology, for example.

Many of our 200 academic staff bring commercial and professional experience into the classroom, adding real value to students’ understanding of their subject. Reviews by the Quality Assurance Agency rate us as having excellent teaching quality.

21st Century Resources

World-class facilities help students progress their learning and present coursework professionally. These include the University’s technology-rich, 24/7 Learning Resources Centres and the groundbreaking virtual learning environment StudyNet, as well as private study areas and computer suites.

Lectures by professional practitioners and keynote speakers provide inspiration, while workshops build practical skills. Open to everyone, our MBA Masterclass series of lectures allow students and business professionals to mix and have access to the latest expert thinking on a wide variety of business topics. Our annual ‘Marketing@UH’ event brings together students, academic staff and the business community to share best practice in marketing.

Enterprise Partnerships

We connect directly with business in many different ways, including contract research and consultancy, networking events, and the activities of the regional Business Advisory Bureau, which now forms part of the University.

One of the most exciting recent developments is the School’s Graduate Consulting Unit. Matching graduate talent with companies’ strategic needs, we exchange our expertise for the opportunity to boost our graduates’ career prospects with valuable commercial experience.

As the region’s leading provider of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), we are  involved in running projects worth over half a million pounds a year.

Research Focus

We are home to a vibrant research community with a range of specialist research centres, which are rated amongst the best new university business schools in the UK government’s most recent evaluation of research quality.

The School has particularly strong research in the areas of complexity and management, the creative industries, employment studies, institutional economics, and finance and accounting.

International Outlook

On campus, the School has a lively multicultural community - about a third of our students are from overseas.

A further 2,500 students are studying University of Hertfordshire Business School courses abroad with our collaborative partners in Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hungary and Malaysia.

The School runs study exchange programmes with 60 partner universities and business schools across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, allowing students the option to experience study and/or work overseas as part of their course of study. All Business School students also have the opportunity to study a language as part of their course.
