Student life

  • The Business School is based at the University's £120m de Havilland Campus which was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh 2003.
  • We currently have over 4,300 students that include more than 900 postgraduates.
  • Our students study 18 undergraduate and 15 taught postgraduate programmes alongside research degrees and professional courses.
  • In 2009/10, the School reviewed its undergraduate portfolio to ensure the employability prospects of its students is maximised and has now embarked on a similar postgraduate portfolio review.
  • The School offers an MBA and a broad range of research degrees including two professional doctorates (DBA and DMan), and has over 70 research degree students from the UK, Europe and further afield.
  • The School offers work placements on all of its undergraduate programmes and on average, 150 - 200 students per year have taken up this opportunity. UHBS also has student exchange partnerships with more than 90 international partner institutions in Europe, North America, South America, the Asia Pacific and Australia, and currently 112 students have taken up this opportunity.

Business School staff

  • The Business School has over 150 full time academic staff and 120 visiting lecturers who bring their industry expertise into the classroom. There are an additional 40 staff in the professional team, supporting students and the work of the School.
  • The School is led by Dean Jerry Forrester and is organised into three academic departments:

Research strengths

Accreditations and Professional links

  • The School has successfully obtained EPAS accreditation, the programme accreditation of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), for BA International Business and is one of only five UK and 35 international universities with such an accreditation.
  • The School is an accredited centre for a wide range of professional bodies, including The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Marketing( CIM), Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM), Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) and City and Guilds (C&G).
  • Additionally, the School also has programmes approved/endorsed by professional bodies, including The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the Institute for Management Information Systems (IMIS), the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) and the Market Research Society (MRS).
  • The School is the UK partner of two international consortia offering dual awards, the TransAtlantic Business School Alliance (TABSA) at undergraduate level (BA International Management) and the International Business School Alliance (IBSA) at masters level (MSc Global Business). TABSA has recently obtained EU-US Atlantis funding for student and staff mobility.

Studying with the Business School overseas

  • The Business School has over 110 students per year studying exchange partnerships with more than 90 international partner institutions in: Europe, North America, South America, The Asia Pacific, Australasia and Africa.
  • We have over 2,400 students studying degrees abroad in: Malaysia, Greece and Canada. The school also has students studying abroad in Paris, Singapore, Trinidad and Mauritius through Blended-Learning.

Enterprise and business services


  • The School is a hub for enterprise and knowledge transfer, working closely with both public and private sector organisations for the benefit of the regional economy through its research, consultancy and short course activity. It has:

    o A track record in managing KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) programmes and delivering management and leadership development programmes for business;

    o Consultancy strengths applied to the creative industries, statistical services, communication, and sustainable business practices at a national and international level;

    o A Graduate Consulting Unit (GCU) which provides an innovative service to small and medium sized businesses in the region, as well as an opportunity for students to apply their business skills.
