About the course

The MA by Research Linguistics and Applied Language Studies offers an independent, supported learning programme in combination with a more structured learning experience. Students undertake a short course in research methods, attend research seminars/workshops, and write two shorter essays all in preparation for their final dissertation. Students can choose to focus the two essays and the dissertation on any topics which can be supported by the expertise of our researchers. Potential areas of study include semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, critical discourse analysis, communication and culture, and English language teaching.

Entry requirements

An honours degree (normally at least 2:1 or above) in an appropriate discipline. IELTS entry requirement is normally 6.5, TOEFL 550 (213 CBT) or equivalent for overseas students.
