Who should attend this course?

This Preparing for postgraduate success course is designed to prepare health, sport and exercise professionals for success in their postgraduate studies.

It is particularly well suited for individuals who have been away from academic study for many years and those with little experience with searching and evaluating research and professional literature.

Course content

The Preparing for postgraduate success course aims to develop your academic skills in preparation for postgraduate study and assessment.

Evaluation of professional and government documents and guidelines will also be covered in the course. Students will be facilitated to develop their academic writing, communication and critical reflection skills. Additionally, the course will include study skills such as time management and preparing for assessments.

On this course you learn to search and evaluate sources of evidence including: databases, journals, books, grey literature, media websites and publications.

The topics include:

  • a review of the epidemiological influences on health
  • identification and assessment of health needs
  • a review of the models and philosophies of health promotion and theories and models of health psychology and communication

The course also covers a review of key government health promotion strategies, critical evaluation of health promotion activities and international healthcare perspectives. In addition it explores and debates ethical considerations.

The course uses group sessions in which you actively participate. You also engage in academic and professional communication both as part of the learning and assessment processes.
