Who should attend this course?

This Positive approaches to managing challenging behaviour in learning disability services course is for qualified staff and managers working in health, social, private and voluntary sector Challenging Behaviour services.

To apply for Level 6 study you must hold a minimum of a Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent. To apply for Level 7 study you must hold a minimum of a first Degree or equivalent. The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or you can use the credits towards a BSc/MSc course at the University.

Course content

The aim of the course is to critically evaluate knowledge, skills, systems and processes for managing high quality services for people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Epidemiology and bio-psychosocial causes of challenging behaviour in learning disability
  • Approaches to managing challenging behaviour
  • Types & methods of assessments
  • Plan/implement/evaluate high quality person centred interventions
  • Policies, procedures and Mental Capacity Act
  • Ethical guidelines against misuse and abuse of behavioural interventions
  • Coping and managing stress
  • Critical incidents analysis and support for staff, carers and relatives
  • Effective multidisciplinary working
