Nutritional wellbeing for pregnancy
Who should attend this course?
The Nutritional wellbeing for pregnancy course is suitable for currently NMC registered and practising midwives who have a special interest in the nutritional wellbeing of the childbearing woman.
The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of a postgraduate award.
Course content
This course aims to critically analyse and evaluate the psychological, sociological and physical impact of nutrition on the woman and her family as well as the factors that could negatively impact on the nutritional status and wellbeing of the woman and her family.
In this course you explore dietetics within your own roles in relation to the development of complications and medical conditions. It enables you to apply evidence-based decision making to empower women to make informed care choices in relation to their nutritional health and wellbeing while exploring in depth, the physiological, sociological, psychological and political impact of nutrition.
It covers topics such as:
- The psychological meaning of food
- The cultural impact of food and diet
- The politics of food and sociological meaning of food including the historical context of dietetics
- The issue of body image in relation to dietetics and nutritional wellbeing with regard to health promotion
You will also cover the relevant physiology to support evidence-based in addition to the psychological and sociological approach to nutrition.

Assessment
The assessment includes a presentation (30%) and an essay (70%).

You will holding either an MSc (normally a first degree) in a related subject and 60 level 3 credits or a BSc (Hons) 240 credits, 120 at level 1 and 120 at level 2.
