Non medical prescribing for nurses (V150)

Who should attend this course?

The Non medical prescribing for nurses (V150) course is suitable for all nurses and midwives registered with the NMC and practice in an area of clinical need in which prescribing from nurse prescribers formulary for community practitioners will improve patient care.

You need to have at least three years experience in practice, or one full year full-time relevant experience in the area of intended prescribing practice.

You also need a mentor who is willing to support and assess you in supervised practice. Current Disclosure and Barring Service clearance is also necessary.

Course content

The aim of the course is to provide opportunities to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in prescribing practice through independent reasoned thought, systematic enquiry, reflection and evaluation.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Systematic approaches to assessment and diagnosis
  • Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
  • Factors that influence prescribing practice and patients' use of medication
  • Evidence based sources of information
  • Legal, professional and ethical issues associated with the role.
